Privacy policy

Last updated: 1 November 2026

CampOracle is a camping app for Australia. This policy explains what information the app uses, what leaves your device, and who receives it. CampOracle is made by Shane Lord, who is responsible for the information described here.

No account

CampOracle has no sign-up or account. We do not ask for your name, email address or phone number to use the app.

What stays on your device

  • Your location. The app uses your location, while it is open, to show where you are on the map, work out distances to camp sites and list places nearby. Your location is not sent to us.
  • Your trips, saved places and settings. These are stored in a database on your device. They are not sent to us. Deleting the app deletes them.

What leaves your device

Reports and suggestions you choose to send. When you report a problem, edit a place's details, say you were at a place or add a new place, the app asks for your consent first. It then sends your report to Open Camping DB, the open camping database the app's places come from. A report contains the place, what you said about it (for example a fact, a note or the date you visited), and for a new place or a wrong location, the place's coordinates. It also carries a random install ID made by the app and the app version, so that duplicate or abusive reports can be spotted. It does not include your name, email or account. Reports are reviewed before they are published, and what is published becomes part of an open dataset.

Maps and data downloads. Showing the map and downloading map areas or place data makes ordinary requests to OpenFreeMap, Apple Maps or Google Maps, GitHub (where data updates are published) and the App Store or Google Play. These services see your device's IP address, as any website would. The app adds no identifiers to these requests.

Crash and error reports. Release versions of the app send a report when something goes wrong. A report contains the error and where in the app it happened, the app version and build, and your device model and operating system version. It contains no identity, location, web addresses or screenshots. Reports go to our own error tracking server, not to a third party.

Advertising. The free version shows ads from Google AdMob. Google collects an approximate location worked out from your IP address, how you interact with ads, and diagnostic information.

  • On iPhone and iPad, the app asks whether you allow tracking before it shows personalised ads. If you allow it, Google receives your device's advertising identifier and may use it with information from other apps and websites to show ads chosen for you. If you don't, Google does not receive the advertising identifier and you see ads that are not personalised. You can change this at any time in Settings, Privacy & Security, Tracking.
  • On Android, Google uses your device's advertising ID to show personalised ads. You can reset or delete the advertising ID in Settings, Privacy, Ads, and you then see ads that are not personalised.

How Google uses this information is set out in Google's privacy policy and how Google uses information from apps that use its services.

Purchases. If you buy Remove ads, the purchase is handled by the App Store or Google Play. RevenueCat, the service that confirms purchases for the app, receives your purchase history and an anonymous app user ID. It does not receive your payment details. See RevenueCat's privacy policy.

What we do not do

  • We do not sell your information.
  • We do not use an analytics service to track how you use the app.
  • We do not knowingly collect information from children. The app is intended for people aged 18 and over.

Security

Everything the app sends is encrypted in transit (HTTPS).

Your choices and deleting your information

  • You can turn off location access in your device's settings. The map still works without it.
  • You can choose not to send reports. The app asks for consent before the first one.
  • You can say no to tracking on iPhone and iPad, or reset or delete your advertising ID on Android. You still see ads, but they are not personalised.
  • Deleting the app removes your trips, saved places, settings and the install ID from your device.
  • Because there is no account, we hold nothing that identifies you. If you have sent reports and want them removed, contact us with the place and the date you sent them.

Your rights

We handle personal information in line with the Australian Privacy Principles in the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth). You can ask us what information we hold about you, or ask us to correct it. If you are not happy with our answer, you can complain to the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner.

Changes

If this policy changes, we will update it here and change the date at the top.
